Overcoming Overwhelm

I don’t know about you but when my schedule becomes overloaded, work ups the anti and family or friends require some extra TCL all at the same time I can start to feel overwhelmed and pulled in all different directions.

The control freak within me wants to break out and organise every spec of disorder available.

Which don’t get me wrong could come in handy, though it can also stop your ability to be able to flow with change and cultivate expectations. So when a time changes or someone is running late your whole day is turned upside down.

So how do you stay calm, centred and positive during these times?

When you know you have a period of time coming up that is going to be a challenge to juggle take time out to organise your schedule. If there are catch-ups or meetings that aren’t an absolute priority simply shift, most people will understand as long as you give them enough notice.

Communicate, communicate, communicate! Let your family, friends and co-workers know that you have a lot on your plate and may not be as present as you would like to be. You may even find that they offer to pick-up a few tasks from your to-do list to lighten your load or give you a little more space.

Make time for yourself. This may sound crazy though taking even 5 minutes out to yourself is so important when you are feeling overwhelmed. It gives you a chance to catch your breath, refill yourself up and calm the mind. It can be as simple as being present while ordering and waiting for your takeaway off, instead of scrolling social media or responding to a quick text. You can add an extra couple of minutes to your shower at the end of the day to close your eyes and feel the water on your skin. Or even taking out 10 minutes to meditate.

Remember that life is filled with exciting opportunities and adventures. While we want to say yes to everything and give our time to everyone, it is ok to say no. When you are running on low or already have a full schedule it is ok to say no. It is important to create space for life to unfold rather than for it to whirl past without us even knowing.
